Peony Banner
Peony, Paeonia: One look at this delicate, ruffled, luxurious bloom & you’d assume the peony (symbol of wealth, beauty & love) must be terribly fickle…yet throughout a turbulent childhood my mother would dig her beloved peony bulbs up every time we had to move, replanting them at the next house, watching them take root & thrive amidst chaos…as she watched her children do much the same.
Rather than picking flowers & plants to illustrate in any structured way or based on their traditional meanings, I’ve chosen a few flowers to very simply render that tell the story of who my mother was…and hence, who i am.
Original Peony illustration, screenprinted in-house, & sewn on my mom’s 1930’s Singer sewing machine. Off white & gold print on red, finished with gold fringe & hanging hardware - 10.5” wide, 15” long including fringe.
