Selkie: Vengeful Elemental of Water

Scottish folklore tells of the Selkie who appears in Seal form when in the water; she is able to shed her Seal skin & emerge in human form -a fair maiden- to explore the Earthen realm. In these moments, when inhabiting the body of a comely woman, men would search the shores for seal skins - taking them & keeping them locked away, thus forcing the Selkie to stay in her appealing human form, held hostage in marriage & childbearing, beholden to these men & unable to return to her watery world of freedom.

My Selking has evovled - integrating Walruses into her lineage, she bears their massive, sharp tusks. Gods help the men who find a Walrus pelt at the waters edge & take it, looking to coerce a wild woman of the water into marriage & servitude. The Selkie does not hesitate to turn those tusks on her captors - goring them, turning the tides red with their blood as she slips back into her skin, and the waters beyond.

9x12” print of original artwork by Kita (that’s me!) printed & packed in my very own studio in a biodegradable cellulose sleeve. Story card included.
